4 Reasons to Choose a Bump-Out Addition Over a Larger Extension

Blog

When people think about home additions, they usually imagine large extensions that add significant space or even whole new rooms to an existing property. However, you can also go for something less extreme. A bump-out addition is smaller than most other extensions. As a general rule, a bump-out is not the same size as a whole room. Instead, they are used to make existing spaces a little larger.

While plenty of homeowners will require the added space of a traditional extension, a bump-out addition can sometimes make more sense. With that in mind, here are just four compelling benefits.

1. Keep More Outside Space

Extending outwards might be great for creating more inside space, but it's also going to eat into your outside space. If you like to spend a lot of time out of doors or simply don't have a very large yard, a bump-out addition might be the best choice. They can provide the added space you need, but they'll only make a small difference to your outside space.

2. Spend Less Time and Money

Probably the most compelling reason to choose a bump-out addition is that they're relatively inexpensive. They don't require as much money in terms of raw materials or labour, and they can be completed much faster than normal extensions. Keep in mind that you're not just thinking about things like flooring and roofing. Larger extensions also often require new HVAC and electrical fittings, which in turn means needing different types of contractors. That shouldn't be the case with a bump-out.

3. Fit Around Smaller Changes

In some cases, you'll only need a small increase in space. This is most common when you're renovating or remodelling. With a bump-out, you'll be able to fit the change in your property around whatever addition you want to make. For example, you may simply want to extend a downstairs toilet just enough to fit a shower or add enough room to your kitchen for an island. You really don't need a whole lot of space for such projects, so there's no reason to extend more than necessary.

4. Keep Things Looking Seamless

It's worth keeping in mind that a larger extension is going to create a larger difference in the way your home looks. This may end up making the property look unbalanced, or you may find a larger extension doesn't fit with the existing design. This is less likely to be an issue with bump-out additions since they are small enough to fit seamlessly without creating any noticeable change to the exterior.
