Ideas to Consider for Redesigning Your Kitchen

Blog

Redesigning a kitchen is not an everyday occurrence, so you want to get it right. Thus, it's helpful to consider a multitude of ideas and to think openly when planning your makeover. Consider the following ideas for custom kitchens.

Galley Kitchen Layouts

Galley layouts are useful as they provide a lot of storage and counter area while taking up limited floor space. Also, you don't have to deal with awkward corner cupboards. However, this design can feel closed in without abundant light flow. So consider ways to let more daylight in.

If the room has a window at one end, you may be able to expand it vertically towards the floor and ceiling. This will also open up the room by removing solid wall areas. Another possibility may be a skylight, which will have a similar effect on the ceiling. All kitchen layouts will benefit from more welcoming natural daylight streaming through an expansive window.

A Custom Kitchen Island

While a kitchen island uses floor area, it uses less than a cumbersome dining table while providing extra counters and storage. You can custom build an island in the shape and size that fits your kitchen. In a compact room, you could opt for a skinny structure with a single row of cupboards on one side. Then, arrange seats on the other side or set up a breakfast bar at the end.

If you want extra counter space but not storage, you could create an island with a benchtop and sleek metal legs. Being able to see more of the floor will give a roomier feel. On the other hand, if you have a large kitchen, you can include multiple features, such as a sink or stove, and storage. You'll then need to connect plumbing and electricity to the island.

No Upper Cupboards

It's natural to see upper cabinets in a kitchen on multiple walls, so you may take them for granted and assume they're necessary to the design. However, your kitchen will feel more open if you leave a wall free of high cabinets. Whether this is possible depends on your storage needs.

Layouts such as the galley, U, and L-shaped kitchens offer plenty of counters and storage, in any case. Or you may be satisfied with kitchen island storage or build a tall pantry in one spot in the room.

Alternatively, you can take another approach to high storage. Install upper cabinets with glass doors or build open shelves instead. These options help make a kitchen appear bigger, as you can see the wall behind the shelves and glass doors. However, stored items will then be visible, adding to visual clutter if they're not neat.
