Choosing Drawers for Your New Kitchen

Blog

When you're planning new kitchen cabinetry, you may focus on the style and colour of door fronts you like and what handles to choose, if any. As well as these aesthetic details, you need to think about how to make the most of the storage area. One approach, described below, is to install as many drawers as possible, rather than cupboards.

Efficient Space

Conventional cupboards with a shelf fixed at the halfway point are not the most efficient way to maximise storage. Once you put items on either the top or bottom shelf, a lot of dead space above is typically wasted: most things aren't tall enough to occupy the available space. That's why you should consider drawers rather than cupboards.

Drawers come in various depths designed to store specific items, so no area is wasted. For example, deep drawers can hold large saucepans. Midsize depth drawers can contain mugs or crockery. The drawer trend extends the idea of a cutlery drawer to all kinds of items, including food, spices, and tinned goods.

You can also place inserts into the drawer to divide it into compartments, allowing you to give everything in its own place. You don't have to worry about the strength of the drawers as they're built ultra-strong with robust runners to carry heavy items.

Easy Access

Not only do drawers use space more efficiently, but they make it easier for you to access your food and crockery. You simply pull them out, and you can see everything at a glance and reach items at the back. In a conventional cupboard, that's not the case. You have to bend down. You can't see what's in the back as the items in the front block the view. The back parts of a conventional cupboard can also be dark, so you have to resort to feeling around for what you want.

Of course, pulling out drawers and peering downwards at their contents is not possible for the upper cabinetry. So, for those areas, you can install conventional cupboards.

Diverse Styles

You can fit drawers into a range of kitchens. For instance, choose between flat or contoured drawer fronts for modern or traditional decors. You can also alter their look with your choice of handles, selecting ornate black matte handles for a classic look. Otherwise, install drawers with a concealed groove along the top for opening. Drawers can be more expensive than cupboards. One way to minimise their cost is to install wider drawers that cover a larger area to minimise the actual number you need.
